1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the shortening or lard until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the cold water, tossing with a fork until the dough holds together.
3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a 12-inch square. Cut into six 6-inch squares.

4. Peel and core the apples, then place one apple on each square of dough.
5. Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon and nutmeg, then dot each apple with a teaspoon of butter.
