Desiree Heveroh leads an unusual life. This ship's caretaker resides aboard the SS Red Oak, a World War II freighter, where she volunteers to provide maintenance, security and general supervision of the vessel. His atypical daily life is a real adventure, guided by his passion for this place steeped in history.

Built in a record 87 days at the Kaiser Richmond Shipyards during World War II, the SS Red Oak played a key role as a munitions carrier during the great conflicts of the 20th century, from World War II to Korean and Vietnam wars. This ship is a true witness to history, which Desiree has the chance to encounter on a daily basis.

Originally from Richmond, Desiree grew up in the city before embarking on a career as a dentist. But his life took an unexpected turn in 2013, during the Burning Man festival. This experience was a real revelation for her, encouraging her to question her path and gradually move towards new adventures.

That’s how Desiree felt an unexplained calling to the East Brother Light Station, a historic lighthouse in the area. Despite several failures, her perseverance ended up paying off: in 2020, she had the opportunity to live there for 14 months, two of which were without electricity.
